This month will see our nation relive the tragedy of one year ago. It will never be an anniversary we want to remember. I remember the shock of seeing the second plane hit the towers and then spending the remainder of the school day with my students, trying to make sense out of such a loss. We all feared the worst, but the American people overcame all adversity. The patriotism is reflected all around us, and it represents the foundation of our democracy. This renewed sense of country should see record numbers turning out to vote in the November General Election. We hope they exercise their right to vote by casting a write-in vote for us.If we became the first write-in candidates to win statewide office in Ohio....oh, what a statement that would make to politicians here in Ohio and throughout the country! The people would be voting for someone who truly represents their voice in government. You see, we are just ordinary people. We live paycheck-to-paycheck and shop at Wal-Mart every week for our groceries. We also realize that someone has to step forward and make certain that our government is heading us in the right direction. We don’t see that happening today.
While the Republican puppet, Bob Taft, begins his media campaign with Hollywood-style television commercials, many Ohioans will see the artificial image of a very misguided politician. Perhaps, many people will see through this façade and make sure they go out and vote for anybody BUT the man. He’s not a bad person, but his leadership abilities are severely lacking. The voters have another choice to consider, the bold and brash Democratic candidate known more for his wife’s Star Trek connection. This would be Tim Hagan, who lags so far behind in raising campaign funds that he resorted to setting up an Internet smear campaign against Taft. If you can spare a moment, see what the Democrats consider to be the best strategy for defeating the Republicans at http://www.taftquack.com . Oh, it gets even better....Bill Clinton will be here in Ohio trying to raise funds and support for Hagan. As if the Star Trek crew fundraiser wasn’t silly enough? Is this your best choice? I think not, my fellow Americans. There is still the Natural Law Party candidate, John Eastman. Clearly, he’s the best choice of the three. But there is one other choice for you if you feel as though none of these candidates is worthy of your vote.
You can opt for trying something new and cast a write-in vote for someone who truly represents YOU! No gimmicks, no manipulated statistics, no superficiality....just honesty, integrity, dedication, and the will to make a difference....that’s us. I’ll be the first to admit we still have much to learn, but I know we can do this job and make Ohio better for everyone. So as you see one political stunt after the other, and as you feel the frustration of rarely having a good choice of candidates...remember us. Write-in votes do add up. If we can reach a few million Ohioans with our message and they vote for us, we can win this election. The longer we wait to make necessary reforms, the more difficult it will be to get us headed in the right direction again.
